Sophia-Rotary Medical Centre
- ‘Sophia-Rotary Medical Centre’ was operational in April 1970. The club took over the Medical Centre established by the ex-students of Sophia College. A qualified doctor and nurse were placed in charge. The clinic was well furnished and equipped and soon became popular especially among the poor.
- The “Ravi Bhandare-Rotary Medical Centre” named in honor of late Rtn.Ravi Bhandare (f/o Rtn.Ajoy Bhandare) was set up at the crowded Girgaum area on July 24, 1973, distinguished specialists gave freely their services and skills.
- “The Piramal-Rotary Medical Center” was inaugurated by Ms. Mrinal Gore, MP at Jaiphalwadi, Tardeo on April 13, 1977 for use by the hutment dwellers and families of police staying in the area. This centre was made possible thru the generous donation by Shri Gopikisan Piramal (f/o PP Dilip Piramal).
Red Bag Project
R.I.President Bill Walk inaugurated a project for identification of the deaf and dumb students by providing them with a “Red School Bag” (with the Rotary emblem) which would enable the vehicular traffic to identify the carrier as a deaf and dumb child and exercise suitable caution.
Study Centres
Most of the students live in congested, tiny houses in noisy, overcrowded localities and lack the privacy and environment conducive to study. To fill this crying need, the Rc Bombay Mid-Town opened ‘Study Centers’ at following schools.

Kalyan Kendra
It was seen that the need for counseling and practical assistance among the poor lower class was a pressing one; with this in mind the Club started a “Kalyan Kendra” in January 1972. Free supply of milk powder, cooking-oil and clothes supplied by the Catholic Relief Services and the Sanjivani Trust. In addition the club appointed a social worker to visit homes to understand better family situation.
Dharam Kanta
For the protection of consumers against the malpractices of unscrupulous traders, a ‘Dharam Kanta’ or weighing machine was permanently installed at the Crawford Market during the Consumer Protection Week on November 16, 1976. large numbers of consumers got the weight of their purchased commodities verified.
Mukesh Memorial
Mid-Town took a memorial project as a token of permanent tribute to the Indian film industry’s play back singer Late Rotarian Mukesh. At the Warden Road Junction an artistic memorial designed and evolved thru the efforts of designer and sculptor G.L. Narayan. The sculpture is a semi-abstract symbolic representation of a singer with musicians along with an aesthetic creation of a rock garden rendering a most befitting surrounding. The memorial was inaugurated by fellow artiste Raj Kapoor on June 29, 1983. Mukesh is no more, but we at mid-town will try to perpetuate his enduring qualities as a living memorial to him.
Medical camp Service
The largest contribution of Mid-Town is in the area of medical service. almost every year multi-diagnostic camps are held at various locations in and around Mumbai.
Nature Trail at the Kanheri caves, Borivli
The ‘Balwadi’ is now full operational a large number of men and women have now signed up for “Adult Literacy’ classes, which will be taught in the evenings at the same venues.
BAL ASHA GHAR – “A Home of Hope”
The Club has set up a pioneering project near Lonavla, mainly for distressed children of commercial sex workers between 4 and 11 years of age. Our aim is to provide a real ‘home’ environment of loving and caring; education & counseling; vocational training and guidance. We have extended the housing and other facilities to accommodate more children.Further help came from our generous friends at R C Pullach Isartal, and the other sponsor was R C Nuremberg Erlangen. We were thus able to not only provide a brand new 25-seater TATA bus, but also a quantity of new beds, chairs, linen and so forth.
Mobility Aids & Corrective Surgeries
The objective of the project is to provide ‘Mobility Aids’ (calipers, braces, orthopedic shoes, crutches, Jaipur Foot, tri-wheelers, wheel chairs etc. ) to disabled persons who are residing in rural areas and belong to the poorest segment of society; also to undertake ‘Polio-corrective surgery’ for those requiring it. We have also provided a Computer Training Center at NASEOH, Chembur.
Plastic Surgery Camp
Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town is very privileged to be associated in this project. The process for holding the free plastic surgery camp at Jalna started in year 2003. This camp is being organized since last 7-8 years jointly with Rotary Club of Jalna at the Mission Hospital as a service to humanity. Doctors from RC of Hattingen, Germany come down every year and do the operations for more than 200 people. The treatment includes correcting Cleft-lip, burn marks and restoring facial luster.
Providing Potable Water To Tribal Villages
The purpose of the project is to provide a reliable means of providing potable water to mostly tribal villages around Palghar area of Thane District, Maharashtra State. The villagers are mostly living below the ‘poverty line’. There is an acute scarcity of clean drinking water in the area each year. We have already provided such systems in villages comprising of a deep bore well, pump, overhead tank and distribution taps.
The farming community women folk of the area, covering about 500 villages are organized into 30 Mahila Mandals. A monthly camp is held for planting and care of new crops. Subsidized seeds and other inputs are provided.
A Project For Visually Impared
Since a decade our Club has a tryst with the inmates of Smt.Kamla Mehta Dadar School for the Blind an institution for visually handicapped children. Each year Rotary Club provides cash awards to outstanding students of the Institute. Students who perform excellence in studies, sports, art and music. A ‘special lunch’ is served for the students sponsored by a Rotarian on 14th November each year.
Scholarship For Students
- Students of Computer Training Unit at NASEOH who topped the computer exams during the year are given cash awards.
- Scholarships are given to blind students of Kamla Mehta Dadar School for Blind for successful passing the SSC Board Examination.
- The Annually Prizes are distributed to the students of Sophia College for women (sponsor M.K Jalan ) on the basis of their academic record, service to the college and leadership qualities. Also scholarships in the memory of Smt. Sumitra Devi Jatia (sponsor Arun Jatia) are given to two college teachers for their research work.
